It's a performance. And finding comfort and ease in your physical body and in your mind, in your breath will really, really help everything else. Of course, authority, knowing what you're talking about is, is, is great and but don't worry that you appear, don't appear confident cuz you might end up appearing arrogant. People who don't feel confident are tried to act, it end up having tension in their bodies, they ruin their voice. And and so yeah, finding relaxation in it and focus, focusing on an audience, I think a really key. So when I ask for individual definitions, that was like a bullet point list. I'm gonna read you now what Chat GPT gave Gaby, and I'm also gonna put this in a, in a blog so you can read this all for yourself. So confidence refers to an individual's belief in their abilities, knowledge, and skills.
It is, it is a subjective feeling of self-assurance and conviction that one can perform a task or make a decision effectively. Confidence is often built through experience, practice and positive feedback. Oh yeah, good. On the other hand, authority refers to the power or right to give audience. Yeah, so basically I asked it confidence versus authority. On the other hand, authority refers to the power or right to give orders. Mm-Hmm <affirmative> make decisions and enforce obedience. Wow. <laugh>, it is often bestowed upon individuals by an organization, institution, or society based on their position, knowledge or expertise. Authority is objective, it is determined by external factors rather than personal beliefs or feelings. So again, this is the AI language models version of this in simpler terms, confidence is a personal trait that comes from within. While authority is a social construct that is granted by others.
I'm gonna read that again. Confidence is a personal trait that comes from within. While authority is a social construct that is granted by others. That's very interesting. So yeah, not necessarily cuz actually having authority is also part of personal knowledge. But yeah, I get it. While both confidence and authority can be effective in influencing others, they are different approaches to achieving that influence. And influence is a key word here. Confident individuals may use their self-assurance to persuade others while authoritative individuals may use their position or knowledge to command respect. And compliance. Compliance, these words are very kind of harsh and brutal, right? But influence is a good word I think. And this comes down to I guess rhetoric and how you know, if we are looking, if you've got knowledge on something and you don't feel confident speaking public, you mean you're halfway there.
And again, if you are, if you are, if you're confident and don't really have the knowledge, you're gonna be able to sort of make your way through because you'll find it cuz you have the confidence to. So you are not a terrible speaker if you don't have one or the other, but it's really, if you don't, if you have got no confidence, you better know what you're talking about. And if you dunno what you're talking about, you better be confident with it because it's gonna be difficult. Otherwise, in summary, you know, confidence and authority aren't the same thing, but they are too clearly important parts of public speaking because getting up before others means you are sharing information generally or telling a story <laugh> and like if you haven't got the story to tell, it's gonna be difficult. So while confidence and authority are different concepts, they can work together to make you more of an effective speaker.
And it's worth pursuing knowledge and it's worth pursuing self-assurance and the ability to articulate yourself. And there's lots on this channel, lots and lots and lots and lots to help you. I'm even gonna share some videos I have done throughout which are things pinpointing to some of the areas we talked about. And I can't really give you authority. There's something you gotta get for yourself, but confidence I certainly think is something that you can practice and get better at. And like with time, with effort and like anything with experience, you're going to build confidence and authority, but is really personal. So I can only share with you like the, the things I do on this channel and in my courses, the tools that have helped me. I can't necessarily say that all of those tools are gonna be right for you, but take them, they're there, I've had some experience and I've put them together for you so you know, use it.
You can become a better, more efficient, more effective, more influential public speaker.
